AIMS & OBJECTIVES
This course aims to prepare students for communicating in English-speaking academic environments by building upon the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills taught in English I, as well as further developing their ability to produce formal English. Through a detailed examination of the requirements of producing English for academic purposes, students will learn to identify and evaluate suitable academic sources and to understand and avoid plagiarism. Students will be required to present information in both spoken and written formats appropriate in an academic context.

CILO 1 | Plan and produce an essay using appropriate academic style and citing both provided and self-identified academic sources accurately following the APA style guide. |
CILO 2 | Plan, prepare and deliver a group presentation that makes appropriate use of citations and visual aids. |
CILO 3 | Identify and use appropriate sources for academic essays and presentations by summarising, paraphrasing, quoting and citing these effectively. |
CILO 4 | Provide meaningful feedback to their peers through the process of written peer review, by responding to comments and suggestions made by others during class discussions, and/or by asking questions and making comments on presentations given by their peers. |
CILO 5 | Apply knowledge gained during the course to complete reading, academic vocabulary and citation exercises in class, online and/or via homework assignments. |
