Liberal Arts Forum: Talk on “The Relationship Between the Individual and the World” by Prof. Jiming Chen

On 6th April 2022 the Whole Person Education Office organized the fourth lecture of the UIC Liberal Arts Forum, inviting Prof. Jiming Chen, Professor at Beijing Normal University Zhuhai, and Vice Chairman of Guangdong Provincial Writers' Association. Using his own novel “Ping An Pi” as an example, Prof. Chen’s lecture examined “The Relationship Between the Individual and the World”, which he delivered both in person and via online live streaming.

Prof. Chen used examples of accepted literary texts to analyze the relationships between people. Prof. Chen believes that some relationships are invisible, and some are hidden, and need to be revealed. As a writer is a person who discovers and describes relationships, the describing of relationships could be viewed as a measure of a novel’s quality.

Prof. Chen further introduced the main characters of “Ping An Pi”, the background of their relationships, and the relationships between people from East and West, from different countries, and from different civilizations. He pointed out that many novels are forcible and hedonistic, and lost their essence. He believes that readers' preferences affect the quality of a writer's work. He hopes that college could encourage students to read, write and improve their cultural development.
