On 16th November 2021, the Whole Person Education Office opened a featured porcelain exhibition at the UIC Learning Resource Centre, displaying more than 30 pieces of porcelain which are historic relics of the 17th century Maritime Silk Road.
Mr. Sam Tang, CEO of China Universal Company, which provided the exhibition, explained that the porcelain was made during the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Archaeologist and marine explorers excavated the antique porcelain in 2003 from sunken vessels in the Malaysian Sea.
Prof. Zhi Chen, Provost of UIC, expressed his sincere thanks to Mr. Tang and his colleagues from China Universal Company for exhibiting the antiques at UIC. He believed that this featured exhibition offers a great opportunity for UIC students and staff to gain an historical insight and appreciate the fine arts.
Chinese porcelain become famous throughout the world during the ancient trade between China and the Mediterranean, and the Maritime Silk Road connected the East and the West for thousands of years. The antique porcelain of “Large Bowls with Straight Mouth Rim, Shou Xing Pattern”, “Blue and White Lotus Petal-shaped, Consecrated Flower and Bird Tray” and “Blue and White Octagonal Bowl with the Eight Immortals” in the exhibition were beautifully crafted in Jingdezhen during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty.
The exhibition will be open for one month until 15th December 2021.
