A new ELC teacher reflects on the English Enhancement Programme

As a new member of the English Language Centre (ELC) at UIC, I am excited to share my reflections on the English Enhancement Programme (EEP) as we conclude the week before the new semester starts. Although I am new to the ELC, my connection with UIC runs deep, having spent time here in different capacities for the past two years. This familiarity has been instrumental in helping me understand the unique needs of our students and the critical role that the EEP plays in their academic journey.

Having grown up in Zhuhai and spent seven years studying and living in Australia and the United States, I bring a broad perspective to my teaching. These international experiences have reinforced the importance of tailored language learning approaches that bridge the gap between general English skills and the specialized demands of academic English in a university setting.

The EEP is designed precisely with this goal in mind. It provides our first-year students with the tools they need to navigate the complex academic environment at UIC. While many of our students arrive with years of English study under their belts, the transition to using English in a rigorous academic context can be challenging. The EEP serves as an essential bridge, helping students refine their skills in academic speaking, listening, writing, reading, vocabulary, and critical thinking.

In my full week teaching within the EEP, I was impressed by the high level of engagement and enthusiasm among our students. I’ve been fortunate to teach a warm-up session, six academic speaking sessions, and a closing session, all of which have given me insight into the students’ readiness and eagerness to improve.

In the academic speaking classes, students faced the challenge of articulating their thoughts in English. Several students approached me after class, seeking advice on improving their oral English, as they grew up in an exam-based education environment where speaking was their weakest skill. Their determination and eagerness to use English fluently and engage in meaningful exchanges with others were evident, and I am excited to support them as they continue to grow in confidence and ability.

Looking ahead, I am enthusiastic about the opportunities within the ELC. The Student English Learning Hub (SELH) and other ELC activities will provide further chances to engage with students, helping them develop the skills necessary for success in their academic careers at UIC. The last week has been a promising start, and I am confident that the ELC will continue to play a crucial role in supporting our students’ academic success throughout their time at UIC.
