Yuzhen Jinsheng Yayue Orchestra

Following the revival of Yayue (Chinese traditional court music) the BNBU Yayue Orchestra is established as the first and so far only fully functioning court music ensemble in Southern China. The orchestra adopted the name Yuzhen Jinsheng (玉振金声), which roughly translates to “jade vibration and gold sound”.

The orchestra consists of the band, the drummers, the dancers, and the singers, which work closely together under the guidance of an experienced Yayue expert. Student members come from different academic disciplines and year grades, and most of them have little musical foundation or prior skills. Together they learn about court music, music and dance performance, and perform on stage in traditional court costumes and make-up.

In addition to performing at its own concerts, the orchestra plays an important role in the Chinese traditional rituals of capping / hair-pinning and teachers’ appreciation, which are held annually at BNBU. The orchestra’s instruments, costumes and accessories attract the attention of many guests, and are a must visit on every BNBU campus tour.
