AIMS & OBJECTIVES

This course aims to develop students' language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), critical thinking ability, and to introduce learning strategies to prepare them for success in academic programmes that use English as a medium of instruction. Using a range of authentic, current and relevant materials in English, such as articles, lectures, and visual representations of data, students will be introduced to the key academic skills of essay writing and seminar participation. They will also explore a number of strategies to promote independent learning, including techniques for managing unfamiliar vocabulary, note-taking, planning, evaluating sources, peer-reviewing and proofreading.

CILO	Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
CILO 1	Produce the different sections of an academic essay through engaging in the writing processes of planning, drafting, peer-reviewing, revising, and proofreading.
CILO 2	Recognise the cues that signal the structure of academic lectures, infer meanings from contexts, and demonstrate effective note-taking skills.
CILO 3	Prepare for and contribute meaningfully to a seminar discussion on a provided topic using appropriate language and conventions.
CILO 4	Critically examine the information contained in sources, justify viewpoints, and incorporate evidence into assignments in a logical manner.
CILO 5	Apply knowledge gained during the course to complete reading, punctuation or vocabulary exercises independently using self-access multimedia resources.
