Introduction

The Centre for Foreign Languages (CFL) is a cornerstone of academic success at BNBU. Situated within the School of General Education, our core missions are to provide comprehensive and essential language and academic support that will enable students to excel in our English-medium instruction environment and to equip students with the lingusitic skills and cultural awareness needed to excel as global citizens.

The CFL's objectives are:

1. To equip students with effective communicative skills for use in global academic, professional, and social contexts.

2. To enhance students' English proficiency to the advanced level required for academic success in an English-medium university.

3. To provide authentic academic, cultural, and social situations for students to develop and apply their linguistic proficiency.

To achieve these objectives, the CFL:

  • Offers a diverse portfolio of foreign languages, integrating language instruction with cultural understanding.

  • Employs an interactive, small-group teaching approach led by expert faculty from around the world, ensuring active engagement and personalised learning for all students.

  • Delivers a comprehensive English for Academic Purposes curriculum that builds the English proficiency and academic skills essential for success in an English-medium university.

  • Offers additional English language learning opportunities through specialised free elective courses that allow students to pursue advanced or specific language skills beyond their core requirements.

  • Guides students to become confident, autonomous learners by developing their strategies for independent language acquisition and academic study.

  • Supports learning beyond the classroom through dedicated resources, activities, and opportunities to practice language skills in authentic social and academic settings.

  • Creates a vibrant, immersive language environment through cultural clubs, international festivals, and film screenings, stimulating interest and practical use of foreign languages.

  • Upholds the highest standards of educational quality through effective assurance mechanisms, ensuring equity and consistency in learning and assessment across all programs.

  • Promotes excellence in teaching and advances the field of language pedagogy through continuous professional development and formal scholarly activities.
